Yamauchi leads at Amateur

Dalen Yamauchi fired a 1-under 71 on Saturday to grab a two-stroke lead at the 92nd Big Island Amateur at Mauni Lani’s North Course.

Yamauchi, the 2010 champion, was two shots ahead of defending champion Shon Katahira and Shaun Downie. Yamauchi, a Waiakea graduate, was in the final pairing last year, finishing a stroke behind Katahira, a Waiakea junior.

This year’s final foursome also includes Hilo’s Clayton Amuro, who shot 74. Downie played high school golf at Hilo High and is a grounds crew supervisor at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.

Jim Schneider led (73) the senior division and Darryl Yagi (77) was first in A flight.
